In the heart of Lisbon, in Chiado, the Fine Arts Faculty of Lisbon University (FBAUL) is a centre of contemporary artistic creation, cultural studies and design hosting 1700 students. It is located in a former Franciscan convent founded in 1217. The building itself reveals the overlapping of historical events that dictated successive partial reconstructions until 1836, when it became occupied by the National Academy of Fine Arts, which nowadays share the location with FBAUL and MNAC (Museum of Contemporary Art).
FBAUL invite you to visit the convent's long corridors, multiple cloisters and courtyard, occupied by students and their works. Everywhere you can feel the creative energy and catch a glimpse of the Rio Tejo, flooding with light sketches, drawings, paintings, sculptures, prototypes and space installations, as well as dark and closed rooms for multimedia experiences, repository of photography, screen printing, drawings and plasters archives. The classrooms, ateliers and workshops dedicated to materials such as stone, wood, plastics, glass, ceramic, metal and tapestry are always too small to contain everything that happens there. During LDW you can join guided tours of the backstage, attend talks and open classes and visit student exhibitions in the Gallery and in the underground Cisterna.
